Megawave Air Source Heat Pumps – case study
Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs) are all the rage. Here at Megawave Energy, we provide innovative, cost-efficient energy solutions to both domestic and wholesale customers.
There are many articles and videos online that explain how heat pumps work, see here to find out more. In essence an ASHP takes thermal energy from the air and uses it to heat water for domestic use, typically hot water for washing and heating. They are an alternative to gas boilers, and because they don’t use fossil fuels directly to make heat, they reduce significantly your home’s carbon footprint. That is why the Government in the UK, and elsewhere around the world, are looking at ways to encourage more people to switch from gas boilers to heat pumps, helping you save money off your heating bills while contributing to future Carbon Net Zero targets.
In the UK, the Government has introduced the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) that gives a grant of £7500 to domestic customers if you upgrade from gas to an air or ground source heat pump, provided your property meets the requirements. This means cavity wall insulation if you have it (solid walls are exempt), 270 mm of loft insulation and a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). If for any reason your property falls short, Megawave can deal with these compliance issues as part of our design and installation service on your behalf, making sure you qualify for the grant.
At Megawave we provide a range of heat pumps and fan coil units (FCUs), plus important accessories including cylinder tanks for holding hot water generated by the heat pump, smaller buffer tanks and low loss headers. We can also advise on installing solar panels, inverters and battery storage if needed. In fact, ASHP plus solar makes a great energy and cost-saving combination.
Our pumps range in size from 6 to 24 kW, more than enough to keep any domestic setting cozy and warm. The pumps run on single or three phase power supply with noise levels (when the fan is working, they are not on all the time!) are generally less than 38dB. Case Study – 18 kW ASHP pump in a domestic setting
In this example we will visit a large, detached house in South London. The process begins with a site survey where the surveyor makes detailed measurements of the house size, room dimensions plus estimates of building fabric and ventilation heat loss. This complex calculation, regulated through the Microgeneration Credential Scheme (MCS) standard 3003, is a vital part of the design processes as it allows engineers to match the heat pump power (in kilowatts) to the total heat loss (measured in Watts per meter squared), of the property.
Once the survey is completed, which normally takes between 1-2 hours depending on the size of the dwelling, the design and installation phase can begin.
The ASHP was positioned, as required, outside the property and away from constant, direct sunlight. While no planning permission is needed, although you may need to check if you live in a conservation area, regulations require the pump to be a minimum of 1 meter away from a neighboring boundary. It is best if the pump is elevated off the floor, with a 300 mm gap from any surrounding wall. This ensures air flow around the pump. The pump requires that the flow (hot) and return pipes (cool) are connected to the existing domestic plumbing system. If needed this can include upgraded radiators and underfloor heating (UFH).
Megawave 18 kW heat pump
The installed ASHP Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP), varies with air and required water temperature. The SCOP is 4.6 for an outlet water temperature of 350C and 3.4 for water at 550C. These important technical details allow users to compare the efficiency of heat pumps. In summary the numbers mean the pump is between 340% and 460% more efficient than a traditional gas boiler. A 300-litre cylinder tank for hot water storage was placed inside the property. An advantage of Megawave tanks is that the ports (where pipes go in and out) are all positioned on the same side of the cylinder, providing easy access. This helps with installation and follow-up servicing.

Noise levels
Some of our customers think that the pump is running 24/7 and worried about the noise. Pumps only run intermittently and are not on constantly. A small sound can be heard close to the pump only when the fan that sucks in air is on. Have a listen to the video below, you can hear birds tweeting above the fan!
Fan Coil Units
Finally, the customer wanted combined air conditioning for both cooling and heating. Fan Coil Units that run off the installed heating system and in reverse mode act as air conditioners, can be a great complement to Air Source Heat Pumps. Megawave Energy Solutions provide two kinds of FCUs - freestanding, installed on a wall or ceiling, or concealed units tucked horizontally or vertically into walls or ceiling. We will explore these units more fully, plus other important aspects of ASHPs, in future Blogs. The pictures below show both concealed and free-standing units, installed together with the heat pump system.
